The Next Big Thing Blog Hop

ReDeusLogoTag: I’m it.Welcome to my first blog hop post. What is a blog hop? It’s a virtual event that helps readers discover new authors. The first author tags five others whose work he or she admires, who each tag five more, who each tag five more, and so on. These memes float around the internet every few years, and this particular event has been so widespread, covering so many genres and amazing authors, that it was impossible to say no to participating. Thanks to Kevin Dilmore, last week’s hopper and the guy who roped me into this.In this particular hop, the authors I’ve chosen and I will each answer, on our respective blogs, the same 10 (predetermined) questions ranging from our current works in progress to our writing processes and beyond. Please feel free to share comments and questions. Now, here is my Next Big Thing! This is what will follow all the After Earth prose that I’ve been shamelessly pimping here.1) What’s the title of your forthcoming book?ReDeus: Beyond Borders.2) Where did the idea come from for the book?Aaron Rosenberg, Paul Kupperberg, and I created the ReDeus universe ages and ages ago and after many years gestating, we finally decided to self-publish through Crazy 8 Press last year. We gathered a bunch of our pals and invited them to join us in this world, creating ReDeus: Divine Tales, which came out in August. Everyone had so much fun and the response was good so we decided to do two more this year, starting with Beyond Borders.3) What genre does your book fall under? It’s definitely a fantasy since it involves gods and magic and weird creatures.DivineTalesCover 600dpi4) Which actors would you choose to play your characters in a movie version? My story involves Odin so you immediately think of Anthony Hopkins, the last actor to portray him on the screen in Marvel’s Thor film.  Being a shape-changer, he can appear in many guises and I would think perhaps a well-made up Russell Crowe might do.5) What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book?First of all, it’s a story. All the gods of all the pantheons have returned to Earth and as their followers return to their ancestral lands, Odin strolls the Berlin streets to see what has become of his former lands.6) Is your book self-published, published by an independent publisher, or represented by an agency?ReDeus: Beyond Borders will be released in print and as an eBook via Crazy 8 Press in late May, in time for Balticon.7) How long did it take to write the first draft of your manuscript?I’m a very fast first drafter but it took some time to do the necessary research. So, figure four-five hours for research then a day to play with structure and three actual days for the draft then some time polishing.8) What other books would you compare this story to within your genre?Younger readers might compare this with a variation on the popular Percy Jackson novels while others might see this as a variation on Neil Gaiman’s American Gods concept.9) Who or what inspired you to write this book?I have always loved mythology and thanks to Marvel’s comics, found myself preferring the Norse myths to those of the Greeks and Romans. The story itself was suggested by some reading I had done late in 2011 so the idea has been rattling around in my head.10) What else about your book might pique a reader’s interest? The anthology will features stories by a diverse mix of writers, setting their stories around the world, except North America, which is being saved for the Native Lands book coming in August. I will be joined by my co-editors, Aaron and Paul, along with Lorraine Anderson, Allyn Gibson, Phil Giunta, William Leisner, Steve Lyons, David McDonald, Kelly Meding, Scott Pearson, Lawrence M. Schoen, and Steven H. Wilson.Next week on the hop:Keith R.A. DeCandidoDavid MackKelly MedingAaron RosenbergLawrence M. Schoen
