Frustrations

Posted on

With the best of intentions, I swear at the beginning of each school year, I will find time to read and to write. While I can’t do anything significant, I can do little bits and pieces. And then reality settles in, and I can barely read the paper or do any writing.

The original novel has been put on hold until Winter Break, and an essay I have completed research on needs to be started on the actual writing. It’s the reality of the situation and nothing new, but the frustration hangs heavy over me.

I spent Sunday morning editing scripts from my MICA students, so I was doing something creatively useful. I wish they were taught how to prepare a comics script before they get to me, but apparently, none of the writing classes cover this, and too many of my students don’t look at the samples I’ve posted.

In high school, I am catching up on the summer reading work. Out of the ten cumulative assignments, I have finished six of them, but the remaining four are annotated books, meaning I have to carefully look at what they marked page after page.

And then there’s the work assigned since then that awaits my attention.

The classes overall have been fine, and we’re off and running. The two freshmen classes are establishing their unique personalities, while my three sophomore classes are showing they don’t have much to say about Native American myths. We’ll see if they have anything to add as we move into the colonists.

What We’re Watching

We completed the first season of Dark Winds and are really enjoying it. Bad Sisters remains entertaining, and we’ve begun the second season of Lioness, which is certainly explosive, both literally and figuratively. We are surprised at how much heart is on display in Never Have I Ever. We also enjoyed The Thursday Murder Club (how could we not with that cast?) and the intricately plotted Black Bag (with another solid cast).

What I’m Reading

After completing the faculty book club titles, I haven’t begun a proper book and may not before later this week. And I’ve been listening to the excellent Empire podcast, learning tons I never knew about the Ottoman Empire. There have been magazines, comic books, and some graphic novels this past week, the highlight being, probably, The Knives from Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips.
